CHAPTER I
A. Introduction
Teaching pedagogical grammar in the context of
academic writing for English language learners involves focusing on grammar
content that supports their writing skills. This includes integrating grammar
with the four language skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening.
Effective teaching methods should aim to enhance learners' understanding of
grammatical structures that are necessary for academic communication,
particularly tailored for English for Academic Purposes (EAP). This approach
not only enriches students' writing but also enables them to express their
ideas clearly and effectively.
What is pedagogical grammar ? Pedagogical grammar is
a branch of grammar that focuses on teaching and learning grammar effectively.
It involves analyzing grammatical structures and rules to create educational
resources, methods, and approaches suitable for language learners. The goal of
pedagogical grammar is to make the complexities of grammar accessible and
relevant to students, enabling them to understand and use the language
correctly in various contexts.
Key aspects of pedagogical grammar include :
- Simplification: Presenting grammatical concepts in a way that is easier for learners to grasp, often by reducing technical jargon and focusing on practical usage.
- Contextualization: Teaching grammar within the context of real-life communication and language use rather than in isolation. This helps learners see how grammar functions in authentic situations.
- Incremental Learning: Introducing grammatical concepts in a progressive manner, starting with simple forms and gradually moving to more complex structures.
- Focus on Communication: Emphasizing the use of grammar to enhance communication skills, rather than just rote memorization of rules.
- Cultural and Situational Relevance: Teaching grammar with consideration of the cultural and situational contexts in which the language is used.
Pedagogical grammar plays a crucial role in language education, as it helps learners develop a deeper understanding of how grammar influences meaning and fluency. If you're interested in a specific aspect or application of pedagogical grammar, feel free to ask!
B. ELLs
Enriching English language learners (ELLs) through context involves providing them with meaningful, relevant, and engaging situations that enhance their language skills. Here are some approaches and contexts to support ELLs effectively :
1. Cultural
Context
· Integrate Cultural
Content: Use literature, music, art, and traditions from
diverse cultures to teach language in context. Discussing cultural differences
and similarities can make learning more relatable and engaging.
·
Celebrate Holidays: Introduce vocabulary and phrases related to
various cultural holidays and events, allowing learners to share their
traditions while learning about others.
2. Real-Life
Situations
·
Simulated
Scenarios: Create role-playing activities that mimic
real-life situations, such as shopping, ordering food, or asking for
directions. This helps learners practice vocabulary and grammar relevant to
daily interactions.
·
Field Trips and
Community Involvement: Organize
visits to local businesses, community centers, or cultural events where
learners can practice their language skills in authentic settings.
3. Media
and Technology
·
Use Multimedia
Resources: Incorporate videos, podcasts, and online articles
that reflect current events or topics of interest to ELLs. Discussing these
materials can enhance vocabulary and comprehension.
·
Interactive Apps
and Games: Utilize language-learning apps and online games
that provide context-rich experiences for vocabulary and grammar practice.
4. Project-Based
Learning
·
Encourage
Collaborative Projects: Work on group
projects that require research, presentation, and discussion. For example,
students could create a presentation on a cultural aspect related to a
historical event.
·
Service Learning: Integrate community service projects where
learners can apply language skills in real-world contexts, such as volunteering
at a local organization.
5. Literature
and Storytelling
·
Explore Diverse
Literature: Read books and stories from various cultures that
reflect the backgrounds of the learners. This not only improves language skills
but also fosters empathy and understanding.
·
Personal
Storytelling: Encourage learners to
share their own stories and experiences, helping them practice language while
building confidence.
6. Science
and Technology Contexts
·
STEM Activities: Incorporate science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM) activities that require ELLs to use English in problem-solving and
experimentation. This can be especially motivating for learners who are
interested in these subjects.
·
Hands-On Learning: Engage learners in hands-on activities, such as
cooking or crafting, that require following instructions and using descriptive
language.
7. Classroom
Conversations
·
Structured
Discussions: Use specific topics, such
as environmental issues or social justice, for structured classroom
discussions. This gives learners the opportunity to practice speaking and
listening while exploring important global issues.
· Peer Teaching: Have students teach each other about specific topics in their first language (if they share a language) and then translate it into English. This can enrich vocabulary and improve speaking skills.
By embedding these contexts into English language
instruction, educators can create a rich and supportive environment for ELLs,
helping them to acquire language skills in meaningful ways. If you’d like to
delve deeper into any of these aspects or have specific situations in mind, let
me know!
CHAPTER II. Discussion
Omar, Y. Z. (2019). Teaching Pedagogical Grammar in Context to
Enrich English Language Learners' Academic Writing. Online Submission, 2(3),
213- 225.
The authors is Dr. Youssif Zaghwani Omar an assistant professor of linguistics and
translation, Faculty of Arts, University of Benghazi, Libya.
This article focuses on how to teach pedagogical grammar to help ELLs write effectively
in academic situations. The main objective of this study is to explore how
teaching pedagogical grammar can enhance and enrich ELLs’ academic writing.
Findings of this study are going to propose some strategies, regarding teaching
pedagogical grammar in writing contexts to enhance ELLs’ academic writing. This
study, also, might be used for future investigations in the same or relevant
topics.
For the intended audience that should read this article for student that related with English
language, such as English Education Department or English Literature
Department, so that they will know what method that they will use for teaching
grammar to enrich English Langauge Learners’ Academic Writing.
The method The paper is
based on literature review and interviewing nine ELLs,
regarding the challenges they encounter while writing in academic situations.
The researcher has used qualitative research method to fulfill this study, trying to investigate about the
challenges that ELLs encounter while writing
in academic situations.
This unique things in this
article there is no unique things for describing
the findings of this study. Since the method that this paper used is just based
on literature review and intervieweing nine ELLs.
The authors conclude According to the findings obtained from both primary and secondary
resources, the researchers have provided some recommendations that might be used by decision makers,
administrators, and
teachers of writing to improve the methods of teaching writing at school. Teachers of
writing should motivate students to manipulate grammar in writing contexts.
Grammar helps students enrich and enhance their writing because, as Weaver
(2008) sees, “by focusing on certain grammatical constructions as they draft or
revise, students – indeed, all of us – can write more interesting, more
detailed sentences” (p. 3). They should find effective and easy methods for
teaching grammar as an interesting subject in writing contexts. Teaching
grammar in context helps students construct mental images in mind, get high
scores in standardized test, learn English faster, and become good users of
oral and written language. They should encourage students to write for real
purposes inside and outside school and to practice academic writing and share
ideas with potential readers.
The study of this article is suitable for the students and lecturer of English Education major, especially on the subject Method of
Teaching and Grammar. So that they can know what is the gap in teaching Grammar
in writing context from this study.
The limitations in this
article is the scope of this study is limited to
identifying the importance of teaching pedagogical grammar in writing contexts
to enhance and enrich students’ academic writing.
I am in favor with the
statement, They should encourage students to write
for real purposes inside and outside school and to practice academic writing
and share ideas with potential readers. I realized that using grammar for
academic writing context is important. Because It will helps us to understand
and making a journal writing to enhance our skills in writing using grammar
skills.
This article is very
useful for me as a student majoring in English
Education, I can see its relevance to my studies with my course. From this study, I feel that Grammar for academic writing has a crucial things that I have to realized. Because
when I am in thesis writing it will helps me to write with a good grammar.
